This craft was borrowed from the 1970's Childcraft Encyclopedia set, Volume 4. "Make & Do" was one of my favorite things to read as a kid. There were so many cool projects and they all employed regular household items. (Think home-made papier-mâché & Ivory soap carvings.) Since our theme was Alphabet I thought it would be fun to incorporate the first letter of each kid's name into their project I didn't have regular potatoes so sweet potatoes had to sub. It was immensely satisfying to carve letters out of the potato halves, although our houseguests visiting from Oregon thought I was a little off my rocker. It was also very pleasing to use the stamps. Why? Because I never actually DID any of the Make and Do craft projects. I was just a craft voyeur. So while Aydin bored fairly quickly with the activity, I found great satisfaction in stamping away, blending food coloring colors and admiring how the "ink" saturated the page. (I also enjoyed watching the kids biting into the raw sweet potatoes, wondering if they were some kind of ultimate craft-snack. While Aydin has been known to eat them raw, we all laughed heartily when the kids spat their stamps out, scowling.) Note how I totally goofed the J. Mirror mirror! Don't forget to mirror!
