Nanan and Dede Come to Visit!

Wow, what a weekend! Aydin, your grandpa Varol (aka Dede, pronounced "deh-day") came all the way from Turkey to meet you! He and your Nanan took the Chinatown bus up from Washington, DC, and stayed at a nifty little room for rent on Warren Street. We had lots of fun, and Dede spent many hours holding you and rocking you to sleep. I think your Nanan even got a little jealous! Dede didn't want to let you out of his arms.

Saturday was a fun day. Your grandparents spent the morning shopping in Downtown Brooklyn while your dad and I played with you and watched Wedding Crashers. Then we went for a nice walk in Carroll Gardens, stopping to look at house your father and I were thinking we might buy (in our wildest dreams). We had a late lunch of Myers of Keswick pies, picked up at the Christmas Faire at Christ Church on the corner of Kane and Clinton. We used to live next door to the church. We were happy to finally introduce your Nanan to Father Lau (aka Ron Lau). He's a great guy. Got to love a minister who drinks Heineken at 2pm on the sidewalk outside his church's Christmas event! Anyway, we bought Curried Lamb pies, a Cornish pasty, 4 Stilton, pork and pea pies, a shepherd's pie, a beef and onion pie, and a chicken and vegetable pie. They are all individually sized, but boy, were they filling! To go with our British theme we then cozied up to watch a Poirot. (We also discovered that our DVD player mysteriously broke sometime between Wedding Crashers and Poirot! Luckily we have a laptop that plays DVDs.)

Sunday your grandparents came over for brunch that Mom made: a spinach and mushroom frittata. The special treat: bacon. Your Dede can't get bacon in Turkey, you know -- Muslims don't eat pork. Not to worry -- your grandpa isn't religious, so he was sure to have second helpings! In the afternoon we went for another nice walk, this time in Brooklyn Heights. The weather was a little damp, so we hurried back home after an hour or so to have hot chocolate and spiced cider.

There was one other treat Sunday morning. We had a special visitor to the backyard: a red-tailed hawk, perched on a limb of our mulberry tree to feast on a dove that she had caught. It was like our own personal National Geographic episode. It was hard to get a good picture since it was so gray outside, but I tried all the same.

Your Dede and Nanan also brought you some wonderful presents -- it was like early Christmas! You got a cute red dress to wear for Christmas, a pink and magenta striped romper, a cuddly pink and sueded jumper for the winter months, and a crib mirror that plays music. You can guess which one was your favorite:

I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this toy!

All in all it was a wonderful weekend. You were cuddled and squeezed and loved all weekend long. Your father and I just felt awed at how much joy you bring to our lives, Aydin. You are at times somber, at times silly, but always just YOU. We are having so much fun getting to know you. Every day is brand new and full of unexpected gifts.
